GR51
When approached to design and build a new car
for the Wight family we never knew how successful the
car would become. An excellent driver can make all the
difference but there is no doubting what a revolutionary
car it was.
The GR51 challenged a well-founded
approach in speed hill climbing and sprint racing that
there is no substitute for horsepower. That is often
true but power to weight is what really matters and
the Cosworth 2.8 V6 KF engine prepared by Geoff Richardson
Engines is, for its size, a remarkable engine. Built
around this small, light, but powerful engine the GR51
chassis was an amalgamation of expertise and with a
noticeable power deficit to many 5.0 litre engines the
car was a real lightweight exercise. The chassis was
developed in conjunction with Ralt, although the Gould
version of the chassis had many hill climbing specific
features, including all the aerodynamic aids. Without
any existing gearboxes in manufacture that could do
the lightweight car justice a Arrows F1 gearbox was
modified by Gould Engineering and mated to the KF engine.
Light and aerodynamically sculpted for the diffuser,
yet very strong this proved a winning package.
